Annual Writing Competition

Joseph Henry Jackson Literary Award

Applicant must be between 20 and 35 years of age by deadline and a resident of Nevada or northern California for three consecutive years prior to deadline. Applicant must submit an unpublished work-in-progress: fiction (novel or short story), nonfiction, prose, or poetry. Nonfiction writers who are not recipients of the award may be considered for the $1,000 Special Award for Nonfictional Prose. No separate application is required for the special award.

 

Parker M. and Virginia Howell Scholarship

Award: $800, Deadline: January 29

Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, major in engineering or writing, and be graduating from a high school in San Buenaventura, CA, or attending Ventura Community College.

 

Letters Scholarship for Mature Women

Award: $1,000, Deadline: October 1

Applicant must be a female U.S. citizen age 35 or over and must submit background.

 

Presidential Scholarship

Award: $8,000, Deadline: March 15

Selection is based upon academic merit and talent. Scholarship cannot be combined with other merit scholarships offered by the university.

 

L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest Award

Award: $1,000, Deadline: December 31; March 31; June 30; September 30

Applicant must not be a professional writer with no more than three stories published in professional media (minimum 5,000 copies/hits) plus pay, and no novels published in professional media (5,000 copies/hits, plus pay). Contest is for science fiction and fantasy stories of up to 17,000 words in length, for new and amateur writers. Entrants retain all publication rights. Recipients receive prize money, plus an all-expenses-paid trip to a seven day professional writers workshop and awards ceremony.

James D. Phelan Literary Award

Applicant must be between 20 and 35 years of age by deadline and have been born in the state of California, but need not be a current resident. Applicant must submit a literary work-in-progress: fiction, nonfiction, prose, poetry, or drama. Nonfiction writers who are not recipients of the award may be considered for the $1,000 Special Award for Nonfictional Prose. No separate application is required for the special award.

 

Pat Parker Poetry Award

Award: $250, Deadline: July 31

Applicant must be a black, lesbian, feminist poet and submit a narrative poem or dramatic monologue. Submitted poems must be up to 50 lines in length and on a topic to the concerns of African-American women, lesbians, and feminists, or the life and work of poet Pat Parker. Preference given to poems that inspire, enlighten, or encourage.

 

Audre Lorde Memorial Prose Prize

Award: $250, Deadline: December 31

Applicant must be a feminist writer and submit a work of fiction or prose. Submitted work should take up a topic of discourse found in Lourde's work or seek to illustrate a condition, idea, or ideal found in her fiction or prose. Norma Ross Walter Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: January 31

Applicant must be a woman who is a graduate of a Nebraska high school. Application, essay, high school transcript, and three letters of recommendation required.

 

English Scholarship

Award: $5,000, Deadline: February 1 (Priority)

 

Charles F. and Miriam B. Davis Writing Arts Award

Award: $100, Deadline: February 16

Applicant must submit two copies of work and must be enrolled full time.

 

Helen Buckley Award in English Writing Arts

Awarded to the outstanding senior English major at the Spring Honors Convocation. Applicant is nominated by the English Department.

 

Patricia Collins Amaral Memorial Fund

Award: $600, Deadline: February 15

Applicant must be a senior who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who has demonstrated the finest qualities of leadership through participation in campus organizations and has rendered service of significant benefit to the campus community.

 

Alumni Association Scholarship

Applicant must demonstrate community leadership and have met the award criteria established by the Alumni Association's Scholarship Committee. Applicant must have completed 12 credits last semester and 24 credits at Bridgewater State College as of December 31. Applicants who have transferred from Massachusetts Community Colleges, Dean College, or Quincy College are eligible to apply.

 

Creative Writing Scholarship

Jacob Javits Fellowship

Applicant must not have completed his or her first year of graduate school and the fifth year of a five-year baccalaureate/master's degree is applicable. Applicant must demonstrate financial need and submit a FAFSA application.

 

Mellon Fellowship

Applicant must be applying for a Ph.D program and cannot hold a Master's degree.

 

ISF Scholarship

Award: $10,000, Deadline: March 21

Applicant must be Muslim or an active member of the Muslim community who is enrolled at an accredited university as an undergraduate (sophomore, junior, or senior) or graduate student (including Ph.D.) in the United States who is majoring in one of the sponsor's supported majors as found on their website. Minimum 3.0 GPA and United States citizenship/permanent residence required.

 

Robert Creeley Scholarship

Applicant must be a low-residency student majoring in creative writing.

 

Harry and Arlene Bohr Scholarship Fund

Award: $50,000, Deadline: May 1

Applicant must be a resident of Blackford County planning to pursue post secondary education in composition, creative writing, english, journalism, or other writing-related fields.

 

Sheldon Matthew Smith Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: February 1

Applicant must be a graduating senior from Washington High School who plans to pursue a two- or four-year college or vocational school degree in computer animation, computer art design, computer game design, computer graphics, or writing (literature, not journalism) at an accredited institution.

 

Haddy Harrington Memorial Scholarship

Award: $750, Deadline: March 3

Applicant must be a graduate from a Henderson County high school who plans to continue their education and study art or writing. Financial need is required.

 

Collegiate Journalism Award

Award: $2,500, Deadline: April 5

Applicant must be a college student with an interest in journalism who has been published in a college or university newspaper/publication or online.

 

Creative Writing Award

Applicant must submit one of the following choices: Five poems, two short stories, a chapter from a novel, two personal essays, and/or three examples of literary journalism. Must apply by November 15 and indicate interest in award.

 

Modern Abstract Decor Scholarship

Applicant must be a graduating senior or current college student pursuing a degree in an arts program in the United States. Business plan between 500-1000 words required.
