Selection based up on academic performance, essay responses, extra-curricular/interests/community service, demonstrated leadership, communication/interpersonal skills, and work experience. Program provides a combination of scholarship assistance and a possible structured, multi-year internship for Latino college students. The internships are designed to work with major corporations, and at the same time, provide students with a pathway to high-level careers in the private sector.

Students must be members of SPIE, although they may submit a membership application along with the scholarship application, and high school applicants receive a one-year complimentary membership. Applicants must also submit two sealed letters of reference.

The award is given to an educational institution accredited by ABET to fund research in nondestructive testing (NDT) at the postgraduate level. One proposal per faculty member will be considered annually. Applicants should submit research proposal, program of study, description of facilities, budget, background on faculty advisor and background on graduate student.

A nominating letter, transcript and an essay describing the role of NDT/NDE in their career are required. The award is based on creativity, content, format and readability and the student's involvement in a research project.
