They must have one of the following undergraduate majors: agronomy, crop science, general agriculture, agricultural communications, education, journalism, extension, public relations, business management, economics, sales and marketing, engineering, mechanization, agriculture power and equipment or welding. If awarded the scholarship, the recipient will be expected to to give a 10-minute speech on his or her horticultural interests and goals at the Arboretum's annual meeting. Selection is based on the overall strength of the application.

They must plan to enroll or be enrolled at an 1890 Land Grant institution and have plans to major in agriculture; agriculture business/management; agriculture economics; agricultural engineering/mechanics; agricultural productions and technology; agronomy or crop science; animal science; botany; farm and range management; fish, game or wildlife management; food services/technology; forestry and related services; home economics/nutrition/human development; horticulture; natural resources management; soil conservation/soil science or other related disciplines (e.g., biological sciences, pre-veterinary medicine or computer science). They must also have proven leadership skills and must have experience with community service. Selection is based on the overall strength of the application.
