Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Editing Internship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: November 1

Applicant must be an U.S. citizen and work the full summer at the copy desk of a daily newspaper, online newspaper, or real-time financial news service (identified by DJNF). Recipient must attend a one to two week training seminar before beginning the internship.

 

New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship

Award: $10,000, Deadline: January 15

Applicant must be a student from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania majoring or (for high school seniors) declaring a major in a communications-related field with a minimum GPA of 3.2. Selection is based upon academic excellence and need and involvement in the field of communications.

 

New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarships

Applicant must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student who intends to pursue or further a career in communications.

 

New York Financial Writers Association Scholarship

Award: $3,500, Deadline: April 15

Applicant must be attending a school in the New York City metropolitan area and show interest in becoming a business journalist.

 

National High School Journalist of the Year Sister Rita Jeanne Scholarship

Award: $2,000, Deadline: February 15 (state competition); March 15 (national competition)

Applicant must be planning to study journalism in college, be planning a career in journalism, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have participated in high school journalism for at least two years.

 

William B. Ruggles Journalism Scholarship

Award: $2,000, Deadline: December 31

Applicants limited to journalism or related majors who are enrolled in accredited institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. Official transcript demonstrating potential for successful completion of the educational requirements in an accredited journalism program and 500-word essay demonstrating an understanding of the principles of voluntary unionism and the economic and social problems of compulsory unionism are required.

 

Lyle Mamer Fellowship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: May 1

Applicant must be pursuing graduate work toward an advanced degree in any phase of the utility industry. Selection is based upon academic aptitude, vocational promise, character, financial need, and willingness to continue a career in a field related to electrical energy. These fields include communications, education, electrical engineering, electric utilities, extension work, housing and home furnishings, journalism, manufacturers of electrical household equipment, marketing, radio, research, and television.

 

Rennie Taylor/Alton Blakeslee Fellowship

Award: $2,000, Deadline: July 1

Application, resume, transcript of undergraduate studies (if student), three samples of writing (on 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheets only), a short statement of career goals and why you want to study science writing, and a description of the journalism program and courses you plan to pursue are required to be submitted.

 

South Carolina Press Association Foundation Internship

Award: $3,000, Deadline: January 1

Applicant must be attending a school in South Carolina and be interested in a career in print journalism. Preference given to journalism, advertising, or communications majors.

 

South Carolina Press Association Foundation Newspaper Scholarship

Award: $2,750, Deadline: January 1

Applicant must attend a South Carolina college and be interested in a career in newspapers. Selection is based upon grades, participation in journalistic activities in college, and recommendations of faculty members. Financial need may be considered.

 

AGBU Fellowships for U.S. Based Study

Award: $7,500, Deadline: April 30

Applicant must be of Armenian heritage, be a full-time graduate student seeking a master's or doctorate degree at a highly- or most-competitive U.S. institution, and have a minimum 3.5 GPA in undergraduate work.

 

Julia Kiene Fellowship in Electrical Energy

Award: $2,000, Deadline: May 1

Applicant must be pursuing graduate work toward an advanced degree in the electrical industry. Selection is based upon academic aptitude, vocational promise, character, financial need, and willingness to continue a career in a field related to the utility industry and related fields.

 

F. Ward Just Scholarship

Award: $5,000, Deadline: April 15

Open only to Lake County, Illinois, high school graduates in upper half of their class intending to establish an undergraduate major in journalism or media communications. Financial need must also be demonstrated. Promise, character, work ethic and academic achievement also rank high with the scholarship selection committee.

 

NPPF Still Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: March 1

Applicant must have completed one year at a recognized four-year college or university having courses in photojournalism, and must be continuing in a program leading to a bachelor's degree. Applicant must have a minimum of one-half year of undergraduate schooling reamaining at time of award. Award is aimed at an applicant with journalism potential, but with little opportunity and great need.

 

William Woo Print & Online News Grant

Award: $1,000, Deadline: May 14

Applicant must be a print or online news intern. Award will give the applicant an opportunity to practice daily journalism while gaining valuable career-building experiences.

 

Robert C. Ziegler '84 Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,050, Deadline: February 13

Applicant must be a full-time junior or senior student, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, submit evidence of outstanding achievement in communications, and demonstrate financial need.

 

Kyutaro & Yasuo Abiko Memorial Scholarship

Award: $5,000, Deadline: April 1

Applicant must be a member of JACL. Selection is based upon personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, work experience, and community involvement. Preference is given to applicants interested in journalism or agriculture.

 

Nebraska Press Association Foundation Scholarship

Award: $1,250, Deadline: February 28

Applicants must have graduated from a Nebraska high school. Applicant must enroll (or have already enrolled) in a Nebraska college/university that will qualify a graduating student for at least an entry-level position in print journalism. Preference is given to applicants with an interest in news, editorial, photography, circulation, production, or advertising careers for a weekly, semi-weekly, or daily newspaper. Selection is based upon scholastic ability, financial ability, and good citizenship in school and community. Applicant must submit a statement regarding career plans in the field of print journalism.

 

AWC Scholarship

Award: $1,500, Deadline: February 15

Applicant must be a Washington resident attending a Washington four-year school. Selection is based upon financial need and academic achievement.

 

Karl and Madira Bickel Graduate Assistantship

Award: $7,500, Deadline: March 15

Applicant must be willing to work 13 per week as a teaching or research assistant. Selection is based upon scholarship and need.

 

Joseph L. Brechner FOI Graduate Assistantship

Award: $12,000, Deadline: March 15

Applicant must be willing to work 13 hours per week as editor of the "Brechner Report" newsletter for the Brechner Freedom of Information Center. Preference is given to doctoral students who are interested in mass media law and who have extensive journalism experience.

 

College of Journalism & Communications Teaching & Research Assistantship

Applicant must have teaching/research abilities and be willing to work 10 to 20 hours per week.

 

ARS Graduate Scholarship

Applicant must be a Lorain County resident who is pursuing literary studies. Three samples of any of the following are required: prose, articles, short stories, or poetry. Special consideration will be given to adult learners. FAFSA and Student Aid Report are required.

Carlos M. Castaneda Journalism Scholarship

Award: $7,000, Deadline: April 15

Applicant must be a Spanish-speaking journalist or journalism student who is proficient in the Spanish language and who is able to write in that language at a professional level. Candidate must also demonstrate a sincere desire to pursue a career in the field of journalism in Spanish, have knowledge and interest for Hispanic culture and be up-to-date on current events in Latin America. A second year scholarship may be granted after viewing the recipient's grade point average, general performance, and recommendations of his/her professors.
