Scholarships in Doctoral-level Study

SAO Predoctoral Fellowship Program

Award: $32,232, Deadline: Rolling

Applicant must be a graduate student wishing to carry out all or part of their thesis research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Completion of preliminary coursework and examinations prior to start of the SAO Predoctoral Program and approval of Department Head at applicant's university are required. Application must list the SAO scientist who has agreed to serve as a sponsor for each proposed research project; applicant must directly contact the scientist in their particular research area.

 

Student Research Fellowship in Liver/Hepatic Research

Award: $2,500, Deadline: January 5

Award is for 10-12 weeks of full-time research under the supervision of a preceptor in hepatic physiology or disease.

 

Taraknath Das Grant

Award: $4,000, Deadline: March 1

Applicant must be a citizen of India and have completed at least one year of graduate level study in the United States at time of award.

 

Research Grant

Award: $5,000, Deadline: January 31

Applicant must submit five copies of application and research proposal, including budget. Award is to further the knowledge and use of herbs and to contribute the results of research and study to the records of horticulture, science, literature, history, art, and/or economics. Award is for research only. Interview required.

 

Western Civilization Fellowship

Award: $20,000, Deadline: January 17

Applicant must be a member of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute who receives The Intercollegiate Review. Applicant must engage in graduate studies for the purpose of teaching at the college level. Those attending pre-professional (medical, law, divinity, business, etc.) schools are ineligible. Award is designed to address our culture's loss of memory by supporting at the graduate level the study of the institutions, values, and history of the West. Essay on the theme of liberty and the Western idea is required.

 

Guy and Gloria Muto Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: March 2

Applicant must be employed in or have an immediate family member who is employed in the swimming pool industry. Application must be endorsed by an officer of a recognized pool and spa association.

 

Fellowship in New England History and Culture

Award: $750, Deadline: January 31

Applicant must base research on museum and library holdings.

 

Blind Services Association Scholarship Award

Applicant must be legally blind and reside in the six-county Chicago area.

 

John L. Dales Scholarship - Transitional Application

Award: $5,000, Deadline: March 15

Transitional application is available to Screen Actors Guild members who have 10 vested years of pension credits or a lifetime earnings of $150,000 earned in the Guild's jurisdiction. Award is generally for members who want to take courses related to the entertainment industry or may want to transition out of the industry.

 

Norwich Women's Club Scholarship

Applicant must be a resident of Norwich, VT who will attend an accredited school approved for federal Title IV funding. Financial need must be demonstrated.

 

War Orphans Education Program

Applicant must be the child of a veteran who died during wartime service or from an illness or injury resulting from wartime service. Applicant must be between ages 16 to 23, a West Virginia resident, attend a state-supported school in West Virginia, and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Applicant must demonstrate relevance of proposed foreign study to employer or school or field.

 

Porter Physiology Fellowship

Award: $28,300, Deadline: January 15

Applicant must be an underrepresented minority APS member who is pursuing full-time studies toward a Ph.D. in the physiological sciences. Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its territories.

 

Eurasian Regional Languages Grant

Award: $10,000, Deadline: March 1; April 1; October 15

Award is for advanced and intermediate language study in the countries of the NIS (New Independent States): Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Three competitions per year.

 

Professional Growth Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: April 15

Applicant must be an active member of ASFSA for at least two years and must have completed at least one graduate-level course.

 

Walter S. Barr Fellowship

Award: $4,000, Deadline: February 1

Applicant must be a resident or qualified former resident of Hampden County, MA. Selection is based upon academic record, full-time enrollment, and financial need.

 

Medical Field Scholarship

Award: $500, Deadline: March 15

Applicant must be a student pursuing a profession in the medical field who is sponsored by a local American Legion Auxiliary unit.

 

Newton H. Baker Scholarship

Award: $1,000, Deadline: March 9

Applicant must be a resident of Washington County in Vermont who will be the first generation to attend college, or faces significant barriers that limit access to education, and will attend an accredited school approved for federal Title IV funding. Financial need and community service must be demonstrated.

 

Grass Fellowship in Neurobiology

Preference is given to applicant who has demonstrated a commitment to a career in research. Research proposal, budget, and letter of recommendation are required to be submitted. Award is for full tuition for a 14-week fellowship at Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA.

 

Resident Education Advisor Program

Award: $3,000, Deadline: April 15

Applicant must be male. Preference is given to a SAE brother currently attending or planning to attend graduate school. He will serve 15-20 hours a week as a live-in educational advisor and take meals with the chapter.

 

Harry J. Harwick Scholarship

Award: $5,000, Deadline: June 1

Applicant must submit a letter stating career goals and objectives, a resume showing employment history with a brief narrative describing specific employment responsibilities in the health care field, and three letters of recommendation. Applicant must attend an ACEHSA or AUPHA-accredited school. Reference letters should address performance, character, potential to succeed, and need for scholarship support. Send for an application with a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope.

 

Early American Economy and Society Fellowship

Award: $1,800, Deadline: March 1

Applicant must submit five copies of curriculum vitae, a two- to four-page description of proposed research, and one letter of recommendation. Award is for research in residence.

 

Vermont State Grange Cobble Hill Grange Scholarship

Award: $500, Deadline: March 9

Applicant must be a resident of Vermont pursuing a degree in agriculture at an accredited school approved for federal Title IV funding. Academic achievement and financial need must be demonstrated.

 

L. Gordon Bittle Memorial Scholarship

Award: $5,000, Deadline: February 3

Applicant must be a current active member of the California Teachers Association who is pursuing a career in public education.

 

REFORMA Scholarship

Award: $2,000, Deadline: March 15

Applicant must be a Spanish-speaking U.S. citizen or permanent resident who displays character and leadership, has the potential for high academic standing, is committed to a career in librarianship, and demonstrates an understanding of and desire to serve the Spanish-speaking community.

 

Scholarship for Advanced Study and Research

Award: $2,500, Deadline: February 14

Applicant must have a five-year B.Arch. or M.Arch. degree. Selection is based upon the merit of the proposed project. Project must be done under the director of a U.S. institution. Award is not to be used for tuition assistance.

 

Nursing Scholarship

Applicant must be a Connecticut resident studying at a Connecticut nursing school.
