Applicant must be a graduate student wishing to carry out all or part of their thesis research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Completion of preliminary coursework and examinations prior to start of the SAO Predoctoral Program and approval of Department Head at applicant's university are required. Application must list the SAO scientist who has agreed to serve as a sponsor for each proposed research project; applicant must directly contact the scientist in their particular research area.
Fellowship is awarded for a period of one year at a time. Fellows have the opportunity to present their work annually in a poster session (spring) and in an all-day lecture format (winter) held at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
Renewable if recipient maintains satisfactory progress.
