The program assists heads of households in achieving their academic goals. Recipients of this scholarship receive an integrated network of services through the non-profit organization, One Family, Inc., whose mission is to serve residents of the Commonwealth who are low-income and homeless, or have experienced homelessness within the prior year. Applicants must be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts for at least one year; be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV; have applied for financial aid; be enrolled full- or part-time; qualify as a head-of-household with children under age 18; and be at risk of homelessness, based on federal poverty standards, or have experienced homelessness within the previous 12 months.

Applicants must be members in good standing of an entertainment industry union and and others who have earned $6,500 in each of three of the last five years or $5,000 in each of five of the last 10 years. Those who do not have earnings can substitute 12 weeks of documented industry work.

Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement and financial need and can be used to study any academic field or for professional training in the performing arts at an accredited higher education institution.

Applicants must be single women with no dependents, between 20 and 35 years of age. Eligibility is restricted to non-U.S. citizens living outside the U.S. Applicants must have received an undergraduate degree and be eligible to receive a master's degree. However, the program is not intended for doctoral students. Students must intend to enter the field of teaching or be engaged in the teaching profession.

Applicants must be legally blind, with a vision of 20/200 or less in the best eye or 20 degrees or less in the visual field. Applicants must also study in college or a similar institution in the field of services for the blind or visually impaired. Scholarships are only awarded in the even-numbered years.

Applicants must be members of the BCTGM in good standing or the children of such members. The scholarships are also open to office employees and children of those employed at the International Union office. Applicants must be high school students who will be attending an accredited college, technical college or vocational school for the first time, high school graduates who have never attended college or BCTGM members who have never applied to the program before who are currently enrolled or planning to begin or resume their studies in the fall. All applicants are required to take the SAT or an equivalent, such as the ACT.

If the applicant is a graduate student or returning to school as a sophomore, junior or senior, he or she must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Selection is based on academic record, leadership, character and personal achievement.

There are a number of awards based on field of study or career goal. Applicants must make satisfactory academic progress and have not defaulted in educational loans or grants. Awards are need-based and merit-based and are made by institutions to students.
