The program assists heads of households in achieving their academic goals. Recipients of this scholarship receive an integrated network of services through the non-profit organization, One Family, Inc., whose mission is to serve residents of the Commonwealth who are low-income and homeless, or have experienced homelessness within the prior year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are high school graduates or G.E.D. recipients and demonstrate financial need and must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Applicants must present proof of tribal membership, and preference will be given to active members of the Presbyterian Church. Students are selected based on the availability of funds and best match to donor restrictions. The deadline for students applying to renew the grant is May 1. Awards for new students will be offered on a funds available basis after May 1.

Applicants must be active seamen who are high school graduates or its equivalent, are eligible to receive Seafarers Plan benefits and have credit for two years (730 days) of employment with an employer who is obligated to make contributions to the Seafarers' Plan on the employee's behalf prior to the date of application. Recipients may attend any U.S. accredited institution (college or trade school). Selection is based on high school equivalency scores or secondary school records, college transcripts, if any, SAT/ACT scores, references on character or personality and autobiography. The $6,000 scholarships are for two-year study, and the $20,000 scholarship is for four-year study.

Applicants must be high school, college or graduate students who are planning to attend conferences and exhibitions organized by SPIE. Applicants must be full-time or part-time students who are enrolled in an optics or photonics program at an accredited school. The students must also submit two letters of recommendation. Selection is based on the merit of the application, based on the experience and education level of the individual student.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and must submit no more than 10 of their paintings or drawing work for judging along with a letter outlining the applicant's ambitions and plans. Submissions should be in the form of digital images on a disk with a dpi of 150. Letters of recommendation will also be taken into account during selection.

Applicants must be active members of the Triangle Fraternity who have completed at least two full academic years of school and will be undergraduates in the school year following their application. Selection is based on financial need, grades and participation in campus and Triangle activities. Preference is given to applicants in engineering and the hard sciences. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

The spouses or children (below age 25) of eligible unemployed or working miners are also eligible for benefits. Grants are awarded based on the recommendation of one or more panels chosen by UMWA and the Bituminous Coal Association.

Applicants must produce an original film or video in one of the following categories: drama, comedy, music, documentary, news, magazine show, traditional or computer-generated animation, children's programming or commercials. Professionals may not be involved in the production of the piece, including producers, directors, camera operators, lighting or sound technicians and production managers. Applicants must also be full-time students who have produced their video for course credit at an American college or university from January 1 to December 31 of the current year.
