Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident demonstrating financial need. Award is for individual research in the countries of the NIS (New Independent States): Armenia, Azerbaijan, Balarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Selection is based upon scholarly and professional quality, the applicant's contribution to a better understanding of Japanese culture, arts, language, and society, and to the promotion of cultural relations between Japan and the world. Applicant must have sufficient proficiency in Japanese to pursue research in Japan. Three letters of reference, an evaluation of Japanese-language ability, and academic transcripts required. Applicant should contact the Japan Foundation New York office in September.

Selection will be based upon applicant's academic record, GPA, SAT Reasoning/ACT scores, TOEFL scores (for international students), essay, and a history of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities and community service. NCAA Division III regulations prohibit the consideration of high school athletic ability, athletic participation, athletic leadership or athletic performance in awarding scholarships.
