CAARI Senior Scholar In Residence

The Senior Scholar in Residence (SSR) program is designed to further the development of young scholars and students through daily, informal contact with an established scholar. The presence of a senior scholar in residence at the CAARI hostel provides many opportunities for meeting and working with other residents. Applicant must have a PhD in archaeology or an ancillary field for at least five years prior to the visit. Fluency in English required.

Alert Scholarship

Applicant must write an essay (650-800 words) about a personal encounter they or someone they know has had with drug and/or alcohol abuse, how it was dealt with, and, in their opinion, what was right or wrong about the way the incident or problem was handled. Criteria for the winning essay are the same as an essay written for a high school English class, ie: thought content, thesis statement, supporting argument, grammar, punctuation, etc. There is no deadline, essays must be submitted for consideration before graduation from senior year.

 

AFSA National Scholarship Contest

Award: $2,000, Deadline: Early April

Applicant must be a high school senior living in the United States. Applicant must read the "Fire Sprinkler Essay" (approximately 3,000 words) about automatic fire sprinklers and take a 10-question multiple-choice test. For each question answered correctly, students will receive one entry into a drawing for one of 10 $2,000 scholarships. For each question answered incorrectly, they will be given one more chance at the end of the exam to answer those questions correctly. Online contest only. Phone calls, e-mails, or faxed applications will not be accepted.

Applicant must be a United States citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 who is of Hispanic American, African American, Asian Pacific Islander American, or American Indian/Alaskan Native heritage and is enrolled as a sophomore or senior college student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Sophomore applicants must be majoring in engineering (civil, chemical, electrical, geotechnical, mechanical, or petroleum), geology, geophysics, accounting, marketing, global procurement or supply chain management, environmental health and safety, energy management or petroleum land management, or transportation and logistics; senior applicants must be planning to earn a Master's degree in geology or geophysics. Recipient must agree to participate in a possible paid summer internship opportunity with Marathon Oil Corporation. FAFSA is required. Program will begin as of fall 2009.
