They must be enrolled in an accredited HVACR technician training program and have plans to become entry-level commercial refrigeration technicians, residential air-conditioning and heating technicians or light commercial air-conditioning and heating technicians after graduation. Selection is based on stated career goals and commitment to pursuing entry-level work in the HVACR field.

Applicants must be postsecondary students at a school located in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) Rocky Mountain chapter area. They must be interested in the field of HVAC. Selection is based on demonstrated interest in HVAC, communication skills and financial need.
