Applicants must be instrumentalists or vocalists between the ages of 14 and 25 years of age and have physical or mental disabilities that limit one or more of their major life activities. Applicants need to include audio or videocassette recordings of three musical selections along with a one-page biography explaining why they feel they should be selected for the award. Awards are based on technique, tone, intonation, rhythm and interpretation from the taped performances.

Applicants must be graduate students whose papers are nominated for the competition. The papers must be based on the applicant's dissertation research about coleoptera (beetle) systematics or biology published in the preceding calendar year. Self-nominations are not accepted.
