James D. Phelan Literary Award

Applicant must be between 20 and 35 years of age by deadline and have been born in the state of California, but need not be a current resident. Applicant must submit a literary work-in-progress: fiction, nonfiction, prose, poetry, or drama. Nonfiction writers who are not recipients of the award may be considered for the $1,000 Special Award for Nonfictional Prose. No separate application is required for the special award.

 

Switzer Environmental Fellowship

Award is for research at institutions abroad. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have command of the host country language sufficient for advanced research. Applicant should be a full-time faculty member at a college or university and either have a Ph.D. or be a doctoral candidate who will have completed all requirements except the dissertation by time of participation. Independent scholars or recipients of professional degrees may also be eligible.

 

Short-Term Travel Grant

Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Award is for scholarly project focusing on Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Turkey, and Iran. Project should demonstrate academic merit and relevance for the American academic community studying these regions and a positive impact on public cultural and historical knowledge of these regions through research results. Projects in Turkey and Iran must be comparative and adress these countries in relation to Central and Eastern Europe or Eurasia.
