Applicants must maintain a New Jersey U.S. Figure Skating club as their home club and have competed in U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competitions for two years for a senior scholarship and one year for a junior scholarship. They must be attending a college with a student chapter of AATCC in New England, New York or New Jersey. Specific institutions include Buffalo State University, Fashion Institute of Technology, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and the University of Rhode Island. Selection is based on scholastic achievement, financial need and work experience/history. Students may apply directly or be nominated by a university department head.

Applicants must be rising undergraduate juniors or above enrolled in an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree program in engineering, a master's degree program in engineering, a doctoral degree program in engineering or an accredited land surveying program. Master's students must either be enrolled in an ABET-accredited program or must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited school. Doctoral students must hold either an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree or an ABET-accredited master's degree in engineering. They must be U.S. citizens. Selection is based on GPA, personal essay, recommendation letter, work experience and extracurricular involvement.

If awarded the scholarship, the recipient will be expected to to give a 10-minute speech on his or her horticultural interests and goals at the Arboretum's annual meeting.
