Applicant must be a South Carolina resident and fall into one of the following categories: be a freshmen student who ranks in the top 40% of their high school graduating class, and meets state average SAT scores; a returning undergraduate with a minimum 2.75 GPA and who takes the Praxis I exam; or a graduate student who has a minimum 3.5 GPA. All applicants must be pursuing a teacher education and must agree to teach in a critical geographic or subject area in South Carolina.
Reapplication required for renewal; recipient must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA.
Award must be repaid beginning six months after graduation if recipient does not teach. The loan is forgiven at the rate of 20 to 33.3% per year for teaching in critical areas of South Carolina.
